Franz von Stuck, Inferno
“This painting’s title refers to Dante Alighieri’s medieval epic of a journey through hell. Although Stuck employed traditional symbols of the underworld—a snake, a demon, and a flaming pit—the dissonant colors and stylized, exaggerated poses are strikingly modern. He designed the complementary frame. Stuck’s imagery was likely inspired by Auguste Rodin’s The Gates of Hell, particularly the figure of The Thinker (see related works nearby). When Inferno debuted in an exhibition of contemporary German art at The Met in 1909, critics praised its ‘sovereign brutality.’ The picture bolstered Stuck’s reputation as a visionary artist unafraid to explore the dark side of the psyche.” —Franz von Stuck, Inferno, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1908 (retrieved February 28, 2024)
“Shopping for Bathing Suits Online Is Its Own Circle of Hell” (NYTimes, 2021)
“Emily Ratajkowski designs her own. Kim Kardashian has hers custom-made. For pretty much everyone else, shopping for a bathing suit (online, at least) can feel a bit like walking through an endless hall of two-way mirrors: Nothing is as it appears, each of your steps is being watched, and no move brings you any closer to finding a garment that fits.
“There seem to be more options than ever. One Google search for swimwear and you’ll be bombarded with ads on every possible platform for brands like Summersalt, YouSwim, Lively and Andie — upstarts aimed at disrupting the market with wider size ranges and mix-and-match separates. “Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, and Gerard Butler To Lead Julian Schnabel’s In The Hand Of Dante“
“Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and Gerard Butler are set to star in crime thriller In the Hand of Dante, with Oscar nominee Julian Schnabel directing and Martin Scorsese among the executive producers. The film is in production in Italy and recently landed an Interim Agreement from SAG-AFTRA allowing it to film during the actors strike.
“Based on the novel by Nick Tosches, it follows the story of the original manuscript for The Divine Comedy emerging in the clutches of a black-market smuggling ring in the dangerous underbelly of New York City, and weary scholar Nick is called by the mob to authenticate it.” — Justin Kroll, “Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa & Gerard Butler To Lead Julian Schnabel’s In The Hand Of Dante“, Deadline, October 16, 2023
See here for more on Tosches’s 2002 novel, and here for info about a 2008 attempt at optioning the film, which was expected to star Johnny Depp (who also voiced the audiobook version of the novel).
“Dante Alighieri’s Inferno Comes to The Russian Arts Theater and Studio”
“The Russian Arts Theater and Studio, a New York theater company founded in 2004, continues its 2023 season with Inferno, based on The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, newly adapted by Aleksey Burago and Di Zhu from Dante’s Inferno, A New Translation in Terza Rima by Robert Torrance.

“‘As atrocities around the world continue, like Dante, we find ourselves helplessly wading through savage acts of brutality and cataclysmic destruction.’ says Burago. ‘We try to make sense of the bloodshed among our brothers and sisters, but none of the justifications hold water. Despite all our technological advances and scientific achievements, our species has yet to evolve past antiquated concepts of race, class, religion, borders, and money. We are all lost in the woods. How will we survive this blazing inferno without our Gods?’
