“We Beheld Once Again the Stars (Riveder le Stelle)” by Z. Randall Stroope
“Dante Alighieri was born in Florence, Italy, in 1265 into a low-aristocracy family. Besides his mastery of philosophy, theology , and poetry, Dante also pursued a political career and held some important posts. His best known work as a literary figure is the Divine Commedia (Divine Comedy), a wonderful literary expression of medieval culture. This work is about the story of Pilgrim and their trials and tribulations as they journeyed from the Inferno (hero) on to Purgatory, and finally to Paradiso (heaven). The Pilgrim’s travel is full of danger and adventure but they are absolutely dedicated to reaching the “supreme light” (Paradiso). This work picks up the story where the Pilgrim has finally realized they have found the way to Paradise.
“The two choirs are separate units, and not mixed together. Further, they should be located adjacent or nearly so to each other so that the interplay of musical ideas can be realized effectively.” —Z. “Ptolemaea,” Preacher’s Daughter (2022)
Ethel Cain’s track “Ptolemaea” is titled after one of the four subcircles of Dante’s ninth circle, where the traitors to guests are punished. About the ninth circle, Cain reportedly says, “I was immediately like, ‘That’s how it feels.’ When someone invites you in, brings you into their life, just to hurt you. I was scared of the demo the next day when I listened to it.” — “Ptolemaea (song),” Ethel Cain Lies Here fandom site (retrieved January, 22 2024)

“Commentary: Thomas Adès’ fantastical ‘Dante’ at the L.A. Phil makes Gen X proud”
“Abandon hope, Dante famously forewarned.
“Let us now, 702 years since the publication of The Divine Comedy, count the ways: the forever Omicron, climate change, nuclear saber-rattling.
“It was almost exactly three years ago that Thomas Adès’ wondrously anarchic and entertaining Inferno had its premiere, a fantastical highlight of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s centennial season. Back then, finding brilliant comedy in our human frailties seemed doable. Meant as the first part of an evening-long Divine Comedy ballet choreographed by Wayne McGregor for Britain’s Royal Ballet, the danced Inferno, which had its premiere at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion a month later, became a darker work. It was still full of vivid cheek, if a bit creepier.
“During lockdown Adès finished the final two parts, ‘Purgatorio’ and ‘Paradiso,’ with the complete work given its premiere by Royal Ballet in London last October as The Dante Project. The full orchestral score, simply called ‘Dante’ and commissioned by the L.A. Phil, had its concert premiere last weekend as the main event in the orchestra’s Gen X festival curated by the 51-year-old British composer.” —Mark Swed, “Commentary: Thomas Adès’ fantastical ‘Dante’ at the L.A. Phil makes Gen X proud,” Los Angeles Times, May 4, 2022 (retrieved December 30, 2023)

“Northlane reveal new single, ‘Dante’, along with music video”
“Northlane have unveiled their latest single, ‘Dante.’ The track serves as their first new release following their album, Obsidian (2022), marking the beginning of a new chapter for the band.
‘Initially conceived as a dance track by guitarist and songwriter Jon Deiley, ‘Dante’ underwent a year-long transformation to embody the band’s sound. The song’s lyrics, delivered by frontman Marcus Bridge, center around the theme of loss and the process of grappling with grief.
“‘Dante’ was produced by Will Putney, with whom the band had not collaborated since their previous efforts on Singularity (2013) and Node (2015). The music video was directed by Ed Reiss.
‘The band is set to premiere ‘Dante’ live during their upcoming 2024 headline tour in Australia, accompanied by a lineup of special guests including Erra, Landmvrks, and Banks Arcade.” —Kane Hibberd, “Northlane reveal new single, ‘Dante’, along with music video,” Lamgoat, November 20, 2023 (retrieved December 28, 2023)
