Students Chart Dante’s Lapidi in Florence
Students of a school in Florence have charted the 33 stone inscriptions of Dante’s Divine Comedy throughout the historical center of Florence. La Reppublica details the project in “Le lapidi dantesche sbarcano su Google Earth,” November 23, 2013. To see the locations of the 33 lapidi, see here. (Note: you must first download Google Earth in order open the file).
Was Dante Narcoleptic?
“According to a study published this week by Giuseppe Plazzi of the University of Bologna’s Sleep Laboratory, Dante may have been narcoleptic: a sufferer from the neurological disorder that, among other symptoms, causes people to drift off suddenly at all times of day.” [. . .] –Sarah Bakewell, “If Dante was a narcoleptic, why should it matter?” The Guardian, September 27, 2013

Umberto Eco, Sator arepo eccetera (2006)
In 2006, Umberto Eco published a short collection of playful literary experiments, including rewritings of some of the most famous passages of the Divine Comedy. In these rewritings, Eco reverses the meaning of each word, rendering an entirely new meaning to the whole. Here is one example, taken from the first verses of the Comedy:
“Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita,
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura,
ché la diritta via era smarrita.”
Eco’s version:
“Al margin del ristar di vostra morte
mi persi in un deserto illuminato,
ritrovando le piazze più distorte.”
For more examples, see Cinzia Rosati’s review.
