“Canto 24 is taken up with the climb of the three poets from the terrace of greed to the terrace of lust, and an extended conversation they have along the way in which Statius explains for Dante’s benefit the relationship between the physical body and the soul (according to a mix of theology and Aristotelian biology) and how this accounts for the fact that the bodies of the souls in purgatory cannot die yet can suffer the visible deprivations of hunger. This is a sort of Aristotelian SciFi element to the Divine Comedy which, though doubtless fascinating to its medieval readers, often give the work a reputation for being hard to understand among 20th century readers. —Darwin, “Lenten Meditations on Purgatorio: Lust,” Darwin Catholic, April 2, 2009 (retrieved March 20, 2024)

Abysmal Incantations by Insult
Swedish band Insult released Abysmal Incantations in 2009. The album art they used was a cropped version of Gustave Doré’s illustration, Geri Del Bello.
“INSULT, hailing from Sweden, was born in 2004, as a manifestation of sinister and hateful spirit of Old-School Death Metal in its (im)purest form! At the moment the band is writing new anthems, and, in preparation for the forthcoming full-length attack, a pact was signed with DAEMON WORSHIP PRODUCTIONS to release both of the band’s official demos – ‘Decree’ and ‘Axiom’ – on a single CD, to finally make them available to wider audience. Pounding raw hatred combined with haunting melodies, INSULT proudly marches forth, crushing everything to dust! 11 hymns of (im)pure blasphemy – ‘Abysmal Incantations'” — bandcamp

Jems Robert Koko Bi, Convoi Royal (2009)
“Dante’s journey paints a fine portrait of the world I was living in when Convoi Royal was created. This time, the world is a lot like reality. A world running a merciless race, steered by wild beasts devouring everything in their way. The huge hooves hammer the ground, chipping it away to form an infernal whirlpool. The earth trembles with each thud, tilts, and is thrown off balance. A terrible panic strikes its inhabitants. They raise their arms to shield their heads, run around in a crazed fray, seeking temporary shelter. In the beginning, these wild animals were normal beings whose duty was to ensure a better future for the world, but their stomachs were too empty and their prey too easy for this duty to be respected. They decided to satisfy their ego instead, rather than work for the well-being of their numerous fellow beings who were famished and dying. The unknown paradise started its royal convoy. Backed up against the wall, I resign myself to a constraint, deadly as it may be: to leave.” –Jems Robert Koko Bi
