“Commenter Firescorpio takes us on a (somewhat misspelled) journey through the nine circles of Xbox Live hell, a path that transforms an innocent online gamer into a foaming, frothing, enjoyment-destroying fuckwit in today’s infographic-tastic edition of Speak-Up on Kotaku.” –Mike Fahey, Kotaku, January 16, 2012
How To Avoid The Nine Circles of Email Hell
“Happy (almost!) Halloween! I love October — it’s definitely the best month of the fall season. All the leaves are just starting to turn colors, the weather’s perfect for a pumpkin spice latte (judge away, those things are delicious), and every marketing blog puts out their Halloween-related email advice. I figured I’d join in with today’s post on the nine circles of email hell (modeled after Dante’s Inferno), what will get you there, and what will keep you out. Pull out your high school literature knowledge and let’s jump right in!” [. . .] — Skyler Holobach, Pardot, October 23, 2015.
“Wood of Suicides” Cake by Elisabete Caseiro
“This was the result of a challenge made by the fabulous Kevin Martin a while ago – to create a cake or sugar centerpiece inspired by Dante’s work Divine Commedy.
“This is my first international collaboration and I’m really thrilled to be part of it. Dante’s work was not very familiar to me so It was a great opportunity to learn more about it.
“My creation was inspired by the Wood of Suicides (Dante’s Inferno, Canto XIII, 7th Circle, 2nd Ring – Violence against themselves). The suicides occupy the circle of violence. Since they have ‘denied the God-given sanctity of their bodies on Earth,’ their souls are condemned to grow into anguished and gnarled trees or bush, into the Wood of Suicides. The souls of the Suicides endure further pain and torment due to the harpies (creatures with big wings, the head of a woman, feathered belly and claws on their feet) that inhabit the forest. These harpies nest in the forest, rend the branches of the trees and feast on their leaves, causing immense pain and making them bleed. This is the only time they can speak and express their pain.” — BetySugarland Cake Design by Elisabete Caseiro (Lisbon, Portugal), on cakesdecor.com
Dolce Stil Novo home appliances, by Smeg
“Dolce Stil Novo is an extremely structured range made up of 60 and 45 cm ovens, a blast chiller, multi-functional drawers, gas, induction and mixed hobs, hoods, wine cellars and coffee machines, allowing a wide variety of combinations to be obtained.
“The stylistic feature that identifies the new aesthetic is the use of noble materials, colour and light which characterize volumes with an even, monochromatic surface, enhanced by refined details, above all copper or stainless steel trims, which outline the upper and lower edges of the glass and return as a leitmotif of the whole range.
“If the language of design has accustomed us to the association between technology and minimalism understood as cold rigour, the Dolce Stil Novo collection gives these terms a new interpretation: the removal of design avoids exhibited formalisms and excesses to bring out a concept of refinement and elegance that are imposed first of all on the sense of sight to then reveal, with great intuitiveness during use, their technological content.” — smeg.com
John Dante’s Inferno: A Playboy’s Life, by Anthony Valerio (2017)
“In A Playboy’s Life, Anthony Valerio tells the story of an ordinary man who, almost without effort, finds himself in an extraordinary situation. This lively and skillfully written biography takes as its subject John Aimola, a son of Italian immigrants who renames himself John Dante and begins an intense relationship with Hugh Hefner, founder of the Playboy brand. The fascinating part of this book is the way Valerio relates John’s life to the great epic poem of his literary idol, Dante Alighieri, whose Inferno is based on the concept that the punishment for sin would resemble the sin itself.” — anthonyvalerio.com
