The metal band Purgation released their album, Realm of the Dead, in 2000 with Gustave Doré’s illustration, The Schismatics – Mahomet, as the album art. The illustration is from Canto 18 of the Inferno.

In 2009 metal artist , Brente Engler, released the album Svart vitenskap with a Gustave Doré illustration as the cover art. The illustration used was The Avaricious from canto 20 of Purgatorio.
